The 10 benefits of homecrafts

While the homecrafts trend entered our lives thanks to instructables and videos on social media, it was also born out of ecological concerns! A pastime for some and a passion for others, homecrafts offer a great many benefits.

1 – Homecrafts cut down on waste

Réduction déchet - WE ARE CLEAN - CLEAN LIVING

Refuse disposal is costly for local authorities (binning, collection, sorting, transport…) and for the planet, since much of it goes to landfill, gets incinerated or shipped abroad where it ends up being flytipped. All of which are polluting. So by re-using materials to make new items, you prevent them from ending up in the bin. By giving a new lease of life to plastic, wood or cardboard, you help cut down on waste.

2 – Homecrafts cut down on pollution

Whenever an item is produced, its production process uses resources and energy. Every stage in its production pollutes the air, water and ground. So every item that we make ourselves bypasses the use of these resources, whether raw materials (wood, sand, etc.), water or energy.

3 – Homecrafts save you money

When you recycle or convert existing items or materials, you save money! Making things yourself is always cheaper than buying them new. Even if you need an outlay of a few supplies to make your own furniture, for example, it generally soon pays for itself.

4 – Homecrafts don’t add to the carbon footprint

The carbon footprint is the volume of greenhouse gas required to sustain your behaviour as a consumer and your lifestyle. So the resource and energy use related to the production of your purchases make you indirectly responsible for these gases that are exacerbating disruption to the climate.

5 – Homecrafts teach you how to make things

Bricoler pour fabriquer quelque chose que l’on a imaginé donne beaucoup de satisfaction. Crafting to make something that you have designed yourself is very gratifying. Every little thing that you make (photo frame, toy, etc.) teaches you how to put things together, punch holes, stick things together, cut things out, etc. With homecrafts, you learn how to make things and reconnect with your inner child!

6 – Homecrafts get you into bespoke design

Another benefit of homecrafts is, of course, that of being able to make bespoke items: size, materials, colours… This is how a lot of people got into handcrafting in the first place, because they couldn’t find their ideal product on sale instore!

7 – Homecrafts are therapeutic and increase self-confidence

In a world where everything is automated and where we are encouraged to buy ever more things, taking the initiative and creating things with your own fair hands can really make you proud! Pottery, painting and even creative gardening projects relieve stress and give you a real sense of pride.

8 – Homecrafts pay tribute to nature

You’ll often want to favour natural materials like shells, dried flowers, wood or stone, particularly when making deco items or homecrafting with the children. Decorating your home with little bits of nature is a way of making homecrafts even more eco-friendly!

9 – Homecrafts encourage upcycling and recycling

Homecrafts are fast becoming a proper lifestyle. They naturally encourage interest in upcycling (turning an existing item into something new) and in products made from recycled materials. So it gets people into new ways of behaving as a consumer. Moreover, responsible companies specialising in this area, ranging from clothes to furniture, are popping up all over!

10 – Homecrafts get your nearest and dearest inspired

Beyond being merely a trend, homecrafts have a genuine eco-friendly dimension. Anything that you make yourself spares the planet all the impact related to the product’s life cycle, from design to packaging to freight transport to use. So it’s over to you!
